As an Asian American, Judy Tsuei has often grappled with the concept of self-promotion. Cultural expectations, coupled with the generational trauma that has impacted many Asian cultures, can make it difficult for individuals to shine and be noticed. Traditional publishing houses often emphasize the need for authors to have a platform already or to do the work themselves to get noticed.
In today's podcast episode, Judy interviews Stephanie Moon, who has an extensive background in publishing as a Marketing Strategist for publishers and authors. She has worked with various publishing houses big and small, including Chronicle Books, Grant HarperCollins. Stephanie loves working with authors and helping them find their voice and promote themselves authentically. She believes that in a saturated market, the only way to stand out is by being yourself and telling your unique stories.
Stephanie also emphasizes the importance of authors being able to promote their books, as it significantly contributes to their success. However, throughout her career, she has noticed that Asian authors — especially women — tend to feel shy about self-promotion. This is unfortunate because writing a book is a years-long process that requires dedication and hard work. Stephanie addresses imposter syndrome and more in order for you to become the published author you've dreamed of!
